The puppy dog close is something that you really should be aware of.
Whether you are a salesperson, in marketing, or a consumer of goods and services (or all of these!) it’s important that you get your antennas up and start realized how marketing manipulated YOU as a customer.
The puppy dog close is a famous example for how companies can get you to buy something you really do not want. Here is how…
Daddy takes Mike to the mall. While they are in the mall, they pass the pet shop, and see the parakeets and rabbits in the window. And then…
“Dad can we go inside and see the animals for a few minutes while we wait for mom?” Mike asks.
“Sure.”
They go into the store… where Mike sees the absolutely most adorable puppy in the store in the hands of one of the employees. “Ooh! Mike squeals. “I love dogs! Can I hold it for a minute?”
The worker gives mike the dog to hold.
We interrupt this story to explain to you that the sale has already been done.
In order for the sale NOT to happen, a un-sell will have to be done, where mike’s dad says “NO” to him enough times that they possibly end up leaving without it.
But once Michael holds the dog… he has been smitten with “the puppy dog close.”
It happens to you all the time. Ever gone to a car dealer and been allowed to take home the care for a day or two?
